Still not too late to plant Egyptian Walking Onions!
November is upon us. This is actually the perfect time of year to plant Egyptian Walking Onion sets. We haven't even planted our 2010 sets yet. Every year we plant a few more Egyptian Walking Onion sets. Our onion patch grows horizontally as well as vertically. Soon we will add a fresh layer of fall leaves to our onions before they bed down for the winter. For now, they are green and enjoying the Indian Summer....so am I.

The Harvest
Autumn has arrived at last. The ground is coated in frost late at night. All of our Egyptian Walking Onion sets have been harvested and cured. This is a great time of the year to plant Egyptian Walking Onion sets. You can order Egyptian Walking Onion sets online at our website: www.egyptianwalkingonion.com
The photo was taken just a couple weeks ago before we harvested the topsets. Notice how the stalks bearing the topsets have turned brown and fallen over. However, lots of new green leaves are growing. This is the second growth spurt of the year. Leaves will grow out in the spring, and again in the fall. Egyptian Walking Onion plants will only grow topsets one time per year.

The Onion Days of Summer
Hello fellow Onionheads! The onion days of summer have arrived! This is when the Egyptian Walking Onions in our patch are in full topsetting form. Each plant boasts a cluster of plump sets. Some are big and full and others are small and sparse. They are all different, it's what makes our onion world go around! Some of the plants have begun to walk right out of the garden. Their topsets are pulling them right over into new and unexplored territories. This is the optimum time for us to begin harvesting the topsets. We will be harvesting from now until fall. If you are thinking about growing Egyptian Walking Onions, this is the best time to order. The topsets are in their full glory just beckoning to be planted.

Now Shipping!
As you can see by today's photo, June 25, our Egyptian Walking Onion topsets have grown considerably. We were able to harvest some, so we have begun to ship out the first presale orders. The presale is over, and we are now shipping new orders as well.
In the photo you can see little spots on the onion stalks. These are actually scars that were caused by a snowfall in May.

When will the Egyptian Walking Onion sets be ready for shipping?
We have been getting a lot of phone calls from our customers asking us when they will receive their Egyptian Walking Onion sets. To better answer that question, we decided to create this blog where we can post frequent updates about the growth stages of our beloved plants! So check in here often to get the latest news straight from the Egyptian Walking Onion farm in Garfield, WA.
We want to take this opportunity to thank all of you who have placed your order with us this year.
To those of you who placed an order during our spring presale (ongoing), we ask for your patience as you wait for your Egyptian Walking Onions sets to arrive in the mail. Your orders will be processed beginning later on this month and on into July in the order that they were received. For those of you who would like to place an order please visit our website: www.egyptianwalkingonion.com
And now for the first Egyptian Walking Onion plant update:
This photo was taken moments ago. The plants are measuring at 3 feet in height! Most of the plants are still hiding their topsets. They are concealed in a white, papery capsule as you can see in today's photo. However, a few of the plants have broken free from their capsule and sprouted wonderful medusa-like branches such as the plants in the foreground. Within a week or so most all of the plants will have shed their papery capsules to reveal young, bright green topsets and branches. Harvest and shipping time is still a few weeks away.
It is a cold, dark, and windy day today. Thunderstorms are looming on the horizon.
Here is a photo of what I consider to be the best Egyptian Walking Onion plant "top" in the garden! Look at all those branches! And look at the dark sky behind it! It could very well be Medusa herself! We'll have to watch this plant and document it's growth. Stay tuned...
